1. Product Overview

CI858K01 (3BSE018135R1) is the dedicated DriveBus communication interface module for ABB AC800M controller within System 800xA distributed control system. It acts as the master station on the proprietary ABB DriveBus field bus, dedicated to communication with ABB low/medium voltage variable frequency drives and UNITROL generator excitation converters. The module draws power directly from the controller’s internal CEX backplane bus without external 24V auxiliary power, simplifying cabinet wiring. It supports hot-swap replacement without system shutdown, suitable for continuous production industries. One CI858 can connect up to 24 drives via NDBU branching units for star topology expansion; a single AC800M controller can install maximum two CI858 modules for larger drive clusters. It transmits speed, torque, enable commands to drives in real time, and uploads operating data including current, voltage, semiconductor temperature and fault codes back to the DCS for closed-loop regulation and fault alarm. Widely deployed in metallurgical rolling mills, paper machines, hydro/thermal power plant excitation cabinets and wind farm VSC converters. ABB stopped new original production, refurbished surplus modules are standard maintenance spare parts.
